Land Rover Discovery 4 - best towcar. LAND ROVER PULLS OFF TOWCAR WINTHE greatest fear for any driver towing a caravan or big trailer such as a horsebox is that it should begin to snake out of control.
Conventional wisdom is that the safest way is to accelerate gently and try to pull the trailer back into line but that is not always possible and it takes a very cool head to even try – let’s face it, when you’re getting into trouble the general tendency is to slow down!
But Land Rover offers a brilliant piece of technology called Tow Assist and the Trailer Stability Programme which eradicates that problem, making towing not just safer but also less stressful. It is further proof that Land Rover is one of the few manufacturers to really think about caravanners or drivers pulling horse boxes, boats, race cars or whatever when they develop their products.
So it is only fitting that the new Discovery 4 should be voted Britain’s Best Towcar by people who should know – the judges from Practical Caravan magazine, The Camping and Caravanning Club and What Car? magazine.
The Discovery has long been a favourite for the caravan community and in its latest guise it has put even more distance between it and rivals.
It’s not just a matter of sticking on a tow bar and having a big diesel to provide pulling power. As I said, Land Rover is one of the very few to really think about the needs of people who are towing and the benefits of that approach are evident.
This is what one expert, David Motton, Towcar editor of Practical Caravan, said of the Discovery: “Most cars picked up far lower scores for practicality than for towing, a sign that manufacturers really need to think harder about towcar drivers’ needs. Land Rover leads the way, though. With its full-size spare, self-levelling suspension, Trailer Stability Programme, huge boot and many more practical features, the Discovery 4 ticks more boxes than just about any other car. It’s the best car in this year’s tests by some margin and a more than worthy overall winner.’’
